The Brighton four-piece who go by the name ‘The Magic Gang’ are Jack, Kristian, Angus and Paeris. They, like ‘Stockport supergroup’ Blossoms, formed from various different bands that they had been part of in their hometown. They still occasionally contribute to other Brighton bands’ music, either playing or producing, but this is just something the band say they do in their free time. The Magic Gang’s catchy slacker-indie tunes caught audiences’ attention while supporting Swim Deep on a UK-wide tour this October. During these impressive support slots, they played popular debut single ‘No Fun’ and B-side ‘Alright’.
In early October, the band was sent off to Jamaica by Converse Rubber Tracks. The scheme, which some of the ‘world’s best new bands’ to the world’s most iconic studios, sent the Brighton lads to Tuff Gong studios in Kingston. Bob Marley’s former recording studio is home to Jamaica’s biggest live recording studio, a vinyl pressing plant and a run-down record shop. Singer and guitarist Jack Kaye said: “When we first sent our music to Converse Rubber Tracks we said we wanted to record at Tuff Gong because the thought of coming here was just unimaginable. We didn’t expect to ever be able to come to Jamaica and work in such an amazing place. We chose it as a pipe dream– and then obviously it worked out. Which is incredible.”
They have been working on lots of new material and apparently have over 50 unheard tracks up their sleeve. However, on the 4th December, The Magic Gang release a self-titled EP via Telharmonium Records. Lead single ‘Jasmine’ is slightly more poppy than the band’s previously released material. It’s a fairly stripped-back, summery track with a guitar riff that sounds similar to that of No Fun. You can listen to Jasmine on The Magic Gang’s Soundcloud now (link below).
