Two Door Cinema Club – Gameshow

2010 debut ‘Tourist History‘ and 2012 follow-up ‘Beacon‘ quickly cemented Two Door Cinema Club‘s name in British indie legend. With a polished, straight-up indie sound and a catchy pop choruses, fans fell in love with the Northern Irish trio.

After a four-year absence, Two Door Cinema Club marked their return with appearances at Reading & Leeds festivals. Announcements of a third album and a 2017 UK tour soon followed.

So, after a four year wait for ‘Gameshow‘, what’s changed?

Right from the off, TDCC hinted at electronic influences with electric blue artwork depicting neon lighting. Early snippets ‘Are We Ready (Wreck)‘ and ‘Bad Decisions‘ made it clear that the band had took their time out to totally rethink and redirect their music. Both songs were also accompanied by unexpectedly bizarre videos. TDCC are out to break that ‘just another indie band’ label with this record.

The new album calls on the synth-infused indie pop that the likes of Blossoms and The 1975 have found so much success with. Tracks like ‘Ordinary‘ and ‘Fever‘ introduce a 80s pop and disco flair that we haven’t seen from TDCC before.

Title track ‘Gameshow‘ gives the album a different dimension. It’s still ‘neo-disco‘ but it’s relatively raw and unpolished (in a good way) – more Yak than Prince.

The band’s hiatus was reportedly due to ‘artistic differences’. In other words, they were fed up of each other after exhaustive touring after their second LP. But absence makes the heart grow fonder, and now they’re back and seemingly raring to go with this new tour to celebrate the release of Gameshow.
