Wavves @ Gorilla, Manchester 06/06/18

On Wednesday night, Wavves kicked their summer European tour off to a flying start in Manchester. Gorilla was the venue for the first of three UK shows for the California natives.

The iconic restaurant’s venue basement was buzzing for the sold-out affair. Australian garage rockers Dune Rats opened, with a fully fledged mosh pit already formed and plenty of beer being flung in the air. That wasn’t the only food substance being thrown during the support set – there were also a few bananas dropped onto Dune Rats’ drum kit from Wavves’ dressing room above the stage.

Wavves took to the stage fashionably late. Frontman Nathan continued the rock ‘n’ roll antics by destroying two guitars in the space of 10 minutes. The first was broken in an innocent mishap but the second incident occurred after he was convinced to try out some guitar tricks by bass player Stephen Pope. Nathan proceeded to fling his guitar around his body by the strap – which consequentially snapped and sent the guitar flying across the stage, damaging a guitar pedal in the process. Lending a replacement from support band Dune Rats, they soon got the show back on the road.

The American surf/punk/garage rockers played a fairly lengthy set with the majority of songs coming from 2010 album ‘King Of The Beach’ and last year’s ‘You’re Welcome’. All the fan favourites featured and kept the raucous Mancunian crowd very happy. ‘Nine Is God’ – a song the band wrote for the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack – went down particularly well… As did Nathan’s stage dive.
