East London indie rockers Shanghai Blues released their newest single on Friday 7th September. The track is called ‘Lies‘.
Childhood friends James Chalk, Reece Ismael, James Heed and Mike Stinton formed the band two years ago in Walthamstow. After playing metropolitan festivals The Great Escape and City Sound Project, and being featured on Spotify and Apple Music playlists, Shanghai Blues also received support from BBC Introducing. Abbie McCarthy in particular, who said they were ‘definitely ones to keep an eye on’.
Shanghai Blues are making a name for themselves by touring their raucous live show across the country, yet their brand of indie rock was described as having a ‘sense of calm’ by Clash. This contradiction is perhaps less surprising when the band name their influences as artists ranging from and J Hus to The Strokes and Led Zeppelin to Kanye.
They said: “We like getting drunk and playing loud – not enough people do that these days.”
The new single ‘Lies’ is an extremely danceable song and brings more feel-good vibes than it’s title might suggest. With bassist and vocalist James’ emotionally-charged but catchy lyrics and an epic indie riff, I would certainly agree with previous reviews which have talked about the ‘festival potential’ of this track and this band.
